Many Italians speak English, some very well, especially the younger generation. As a tourist, you'll easily get by on a few phrases. However, it will stand you in good stead to acquire at least some understanding of spoken and written Italian if you are considering a more committed venture. Apart from the obvious advantages of being able to keep track of what's going on, it is courteous to at least attempt to communicate in the local language, and that courtesy alone will open doors.
There are many books, courses, dvds and tapes available online and in shops. Personally, I recommend the Michel Thomas 8-hour foundation course which worked well for me.
Learning Italian should be seen as an advantage, not a barrier as my contacts are nearly all English-speaking Italians, and will be happy to help you by translating, interpreting and conversing on your behalf when necessary.
